Readership

Eight Selborne welcomes two readers each year, one in May and one in September.

Readers have exposure to a wide range of work and an opportunity to work closely with other barristers in a collegiate and supportive atmosphere.

We provide our readers with subsidised accommodation on the main floor along with the use of all facilities and support from our experienced and friendly staff.

Wherever possible we accommodate readers after the conclusion of their reading year as licensees in our annex on Level 10 of the Law Society Building next door.

Unlike most floors, when a room on the main floor becomes available we like to fill that room by having a licensee come across from the annex, in order of seniority.  In other words, we do not usually call for applications for rooms on the main floor, we recruit internally from our annex.

Readers are encouraged to have two tutors, at least one from Eight Selborne. Our clerk, Sally Flynn, would be happy to provide advice in choosing an on-floor tutor.

Eight Selborne has adopted the updated NSW Bar Association Best Practice Guidelines.

Applications for readership should be made by 5pm, 1 December 2024, for positions in May 2026 and September 2026.

All applications and inquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts and references to Sally Flynn.

If you would like to have a confidential talk at any time to learn more about the application process or what your reading year would be like – just contact Sally.
